Canadian study visa overview
A Canadian study visa, officially known as a “study permit”, is a document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLI) in Canada.
To apply for a study permit, you need to:
Get an acceptance letter from a DLI: To apply for a study permit, you need an acceptance letter from a DLI.
Prove you have enough money: You must prove that you have enough money to pay for the following: Tuition fees, living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada, and return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada.
Obey the law and have no criminal record: You may need to provide a police certificate.
Be in good health: You might need to complete a medical exam.
Prove to an officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires: This is often demonstrated by ties to your home country, such as family or a job, that would motivate you to return after your studies.
It’s also important to note that the study permit is not a visa. It doesn’t let you enter Canada. You may also need a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA) which allows you to enter Canada.
Upon completion of the program of study, students may have the opportunity to stay in Canada after they graduate and gain work experience through the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP), and even apply for permanent residency through various immigration pathways. However, each of these steps has its own requirements and procedures.
